SAN LEANDRO, Alameda County — October 23, 2026. California58 Local reports from a dated official city resource. We distinguish notices, proposals, planned events and enacted decisions and do not claim an event has occurred before it happens.
Why the ballot may look familiar
San Leandro says voters approved a transition to district-based municipal elections in June 2026, but the November 3 ballot still reflects the city’s previous at-large presentation. The city specifically instructs voters to use the ballot supplied by mail or at their vote center and follow its instructions; they should not discard a valid ballot merely because it looks different from an expected district-only ballot.
How results will be counted
According to the city’s notice, the Alameda County Registrar of Voters will deliver certified vote totals by precinct, after which the city will calculate votes attributable to candidates in each applicable council district and determine district winners in accordance with its charter. This is an unusual transition arrangement; no newspaper should substitute its own calculation for the certified municipal count.
What to check before Election Day
November 3 is Election Day. Voters should check Alameda County Elections for registration, vote-center hours, accessible voting, ballot return and tracking. A district map is not a substitute for the actual vote-by-mail packet. Election law and the city’s certified procedures govern, not social-media instructions.
What happens afterward
The final result depends on official certification. California58 does not project council winners from partial precinct data, unofficial campaign claims or a generic citywide vote count.
